The Government school is in the fishing village of Matemwe on the north east coast of Zanzibar.

There are 1000 children enrolled.

Some walk more than 10kms
to reach the school. Facilities
are minimal but the desire
for education burns in the hearts of all.

Books, paper, pens and pencils
are always in short supply.
The teachers are poorly paid,
less than 2USD per day.
The pupils' parents struggle
to make ends meet.
Fathers go fishing,
Mothers farm seaweed.

5 May 2010.  School students doing their exams out in the open due to a  shortage of classrooms.
Mwalimu Juma stands in front of the classroom which the school community is currently trying to complete, with scarce funds raised on its own and without Government financial support.
