the first steps

For decades Matemwe was a village isolated from the rest of the island by an arid, rocky coral rag which lay to the west.

In 1993 the road from Mkwajuni was paved with tarmac and a new era of communication with the outside world began.
In 2004 Mains electricity reached the village and the school.

In October 2004, following the installation of a privately donated Compaq computer in the Matemwe School library, Mwalimu Mariamu Khamis of the Civil Service Training Institute of Zanzibar began weekend computer classes for a number of Matemwe School teachers.  The classes continued up to December 2005.

These teachers are now computer literate.

At the same time, the parents themselves raised funds to build a new computer classroom. This classroom is now completed and wired up ready for the installation of at least ten more computers.
